Crawford Park Accessibility Improvements and Sensory Garden

Rye Brook, New York

Clients: Town of Rye, NY and Friends of Crawford Park

2017

Being Here provided design, bidding, and construction management services to the Town of Rye, NY for an accessibility retrofitting and sensory garden project in the Town’s historic Crawford Park. BHLA designed universally accessible outdoor routes (pedestrian infrastructure) to connect accessible parking with the front and rear entrances to the mansion, a new sensory garden with a green infrastructure permeable pavement system, and the playground footprint (playground equipment was designed and built by others). The two new ADA-compliant entrances are universally accessible, blending seamlessly into the landscape without necessitating ramps or handrails. The rear terrace extension doubles as an entertainment space.

Formerly a residential mansion and 35-acre estate that was donated to the Town, the park is a treasured public space used for events and recreation. The mansion is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. BHLA contributed site construction drawings to the architectural package that was approved by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) as part of the regulatory process.
